SMK-MKP: EPP Resolution and European Parliament Round-Table Discussion on Political Crisis in Slovakia

The European People's Party (EPP) held its upcoming Political Assembly session in Brussels on 9-10 April. At the initiative of the Party of the Hungarian Community (SMK-MKP), the SMK-MKP and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) submitted a draft joint resolution to the Assembly of the largest European party alliance for adoption.

The draft resolution unanimously adopted:

- calls on the Slovak authorities to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation of the double murder of the end of February and the cases that Ján Kuciak was writing about;

- calls on the government to consider the reasons of astonishingly deep mistrust of the Slovak society in state institutions also in the light of the events of March, with special focus on the serious suspicion that there are links between organised criminal groups and top politicians;

- warns the government that insufficient or improper measures will only fuel social unrest;

- condemns all attempts to divert attention by questioning the authenticity, sincerity, and legitimacy of the popular protests;

- considers the resignation of Minister of Interior Kaliňák and PM Fico as a result of the combined pressure exerted by the popular protests, the EPP member parties, President Kiska, the media, the political opposition, and the European Parliament;

- calls on the government to fully respect the role of the media in a democratic society, radically improve the tone of its communication with the representatives of the media and take meaningful and systematic measures in order to radically reduce the risk of attacks on investigative journalists.

In parallel with the Political Assembly meeting, the Party of the Hungarian Community organised a round-table discussion on Slovakia’s political crisis at the European Parliament. In the forum for discussion, a few representatives of the SMK-MKP and Christian Democrats (KDH), as well as journalists analysed the background to, events, and possible outcomes of the deep political crisis that Slovakia has not seen since the regime change of 1989.
