Ethnic Hungarian spiritual leaders from Slovakia attended the conference on the role of the mother tongue in the churches’ life — which was held at the building of the European Parliament in Brussels — at the invitation of Pál Csáky, Member of the European Parliament (SMK-MKP) Ex Libris Awards were also granted, which were linked to church themes this year as well.
The recently published book Dialógus Európa lelkéért (Dialogues for the Soul of Europe) which contains dialogues between MEP Pál Csáky and 16 clergy members on Europe and the acute problems of European identity crisis was connected with the event. Pál Csáky invited all co-authors of the book to Brussels; 11 of them could accept the invitation.
Exchanging views in the television studio of the European Parliament is a regular part of the programmes arranged for visitor groups invited by Pál Csáky. That time was no exception; this time, Pál Csáky asked Miklós Beer, Catholic Bishop, and László Fazekas, Bishop of the Reformed Church of Slovakia, to formulate their message in Brussels.
Lajos Gubcsi gave two Ex Libris Awards in the building of European Parliament in Brussels, who as the founder of the Award expressed his appreciation for the editorial staff of Remény (Hope) and Kávinista Szemle (Calvinist Review) that are Hungarian-language journals issued in Slovakia. ‘It is hard to dispute the historical importance of what our churches can do to maintain the Hungarian language, culture, community, education and beliefs,’ said Lajos Gubcsi in his speech.
