The Party of Hungarian Community (SMKMKP) is watching the current crisis in the governing coalition with a great concern, reads a statement adopted by the SMK-MKP party at its Republic Council session, which took place in the village of Zemne (Nitra region) on Saturday. SMK-MKP stated that the coalition crisis is largely driven by personal interests of the three parties involved - Smer-SD, the Slovak National Party (SNS) and Most-Hid.

According to the ethnic-Hungarian party, the coalition crisis has developed into a serious conflict of the three partners and it’ll be difficult to predict the consequences.

The party views the recent dismissal of Education Minister Peter Plavcan (an SNS nominee) as a necessary step, but the persistent insecurity in the education sector could put schools into a difficult situation. “We expect the governing coalition to appoint at the helm of the ministry an expert who will support educational reforms as well as education of national communities,” reads the statement of the Republic Council.

Regarding the November 4 regional elections, SMK-MKP’s main aim is to help develop districts and areas in the south of Slovakia via effective representation within the regional structures.
