The Party of the Hungarian Community (SMK-MKP) fully understands the indignation that the people in Gemer have at yet another postponement of the scheduled construction of Express Road R2. We support the demand made by the local people: Express Road R2 is of strategic importance for the region, it therefore should be completed as soon as possible, Jozsef Menyhart, President of the SMK-MKP, stated in his statement to the press.

According to him, the development of the transport infrastructure is essential to stop the chasm between the region around the economically strong Bratislava and the lagging regions from growing further. The artificial manipulation of unemployment figures — i.e. assigning unemployed people and forcing them to move to more developed industrial regions — causes the depopulation of the territorial units concerned.

They should create jobs for people in situ, but adequate road network is absolutely necessary for attracting potential investors. Ensuring that is a responsibility of the State, specifically of the Ministry of Transport. We have heard a great deal about the “90%” government programme which includes, inter alia, the completion of the motorway R2. It is time for the promises on Southern Slovakia to be fulfilled, Jozsef Menyhart claimed.
